Perućica: A Journey Into One of Europe’s Last Primeval Forests

Embark on an unforgettable adventure into Perućica, one of Europe’s most extraordinary natural treasures. The journey begins in the morning with a meeting at our agency, followed by a 50-60 minute off-road drive to the starting point at Dragoš Sedlo (1260 mamsl).

Before delving into the heart of the Perućica rainforest, we stop at two breathtaking viewpoints: Beškita and Dragoš Sedlo. From these vantage points, you’ll witness unparalleled views of Skakavac Waterfall, a 70-meter cascade that is one of the tallest waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and lush greenery, this stop provides a perfect introduction to the wild beauty of Perućica.

The adventure continues along an 8-9 km trail that winds through the heart of the rainforest. Starting at Dragoš Sedlo, the trail descends into the untouched primeval forest. Along the way, you’ll experience diverse forest zones, from towering centuries-old trees to younger growths. As you navigate small and large streams, natural obstacles, and the earthy aroma of untouched flora, the trail reveals the unparalleled biodiversity of Perućica.

A key highlight of the journey is the descent into the canyon of Suški Potok, a tranquil stream that eventually joins the Sutjeska Canyon. The sound of rushing water and the opportunity to spot wildlife in their natural habitat create a truly immersive experience. Tracks and signs of the forest’s mysterious inhabitants—deer, foxes, and even bears—remind you of the thriving ecosystem hidden within this ancient jungle.

The adventure concludes with a visit to Tjentište, where the monumental Valley of Heroes honors the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Sutjeska during World War II. This historical touch adds a meaningful dimension to your journey into one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests.
